This could affect software updates adversely. If one is not logged in using an Apple ID, there is effectively no way for iCloud to do anything. ![]() Is there a way to prevent the OS installer from performing the quarantine operation at all, or, even better, from activating SIP at all? I searched but didn't find anything.ĥ) Does this method to disable gatekeeper still work in High Sierra, ?Ħ) Is it possible to set things up so there are no auto updates of any SW updates, no downloading and no notifications? No nagging whatsoever?ħ) Can iCloud be completely disabled (no daemons, no logging onto it etc.?Ĩ) How reliable is using a network drive for Time Machine backup (an UnRAID NAS, if it matters)?ġ0) Have app developers in general been quick to release HS-compatible versions of apps? It must be difficult when major OS releases come once a year. Does vmware fusion 8.5 work on sierra install#IIUC, during an upgrade install the Apple Installer will move any non-Apple stuff from these directories into a quarantine area, so they're unlikely to work afterwards. However, I also run various command-line Unix stuff I'd rather not re-install, and some are in non-SIP-approved directories I understand it's possible to disable SIP _after_ the OS has been installed via the Terminal command gh-sierra/Ĥ) I don't want any of the SIP security protections, and intend to run without it enabled pretty much permanently (I realize the risks, and rather not argue the point here). Is an upgrade install a bad idea? I can always do a clean install afterwards if it doesn't work well (obviously, I'll have backups previously to the OS install, including a bootable SuperDuper backup.)ģ) APFS: I don't want to convert my boot volume (3d-party SSD) or other volumes to APFS yet this can be bypassed like so, right?. I don't want to do to lots of app reinstalls, and I expect some of the older apps will refuse to officially install even though they'll work fine on newer OSes (speaking from past experience). Should I consider Sierra instead, or even 10.11? I'd rather not upgrade again 1-2 years, and I upgrade machines only every 7 years or so.Ģ) Despite the problems I currently have, I'd rather do an upgrade install rather than clean. After the OS upgrade stabilizes, I'll move the data on the externals onto a NAS server on my local LAN.ġ) How reliable is High Sierra overall? Is it reliable as it should be now that it's had 3 point upgrades? Reading both the HS thread here as well as similar ones elsewhere, I see a lot of issues in a lot of areas, many apparent Apple QA issues. The HW config: I replaced the MBP's original optical with a 256GB SSD as boot volume, so have 2 internal drives, and 7 external ones (mix of FireWire800, USB2 and USB3) with ~22TB on them. Granted, some of the above may be due to the large number of online data (see below), but by 2007 MacBook running 10.5/10.6 had no issue with a similar number of disks and files. I have to reboot the machine a couple of times a week at least (usually a cold boot), and responsiveness is horrible - 30+ second beachballs or lags to respond to a keystroke or mouse clicks are universal, particularly in the Finder and various Web browsers this happens a lot even if there are no pageouts so it's not a virtual memory issue. However, it's finally time to upgrade the OS:Ī) Increasingly, SW apps don't support older OS versions.ī) My experience of ML over the past few years is a buggy, unreliable mess. I also don't like the gradual iPhone-ization of the UI. Does vmware fusion 8.5 work on sierra full#Haven't upgraded the OS up to now, because of various compatibility issues/concerns, and I've been too lazy to do the full research. I use a mid-2012 MBP (non-retina) as my main machine, on Mountain Lion. Does vmware fusion 8.5 work on sierra mac#Haven't been active in the Mac Ach for quite a while, and need some advice. Excuse if this reads like I just woke up from several years sleep… (- )
